BUMTAR/BOOMTAR NAMDROLING GONPA

Bumtar Gonpa, officially named Namdroling is situated just below Namchi town, south Sikkim. This Gonpa was established originally in the year 1926 at the banks of Gattey River. In the year 1950 due to landslides, the shifting of Gonpa was discussed to somewhere of safe place from the banks of Gattey River. After a couple of years Col. R.S. Rai donated the land for the Gonpa. In the year 1959 Bhumi Puja (Salang) was done for the new (present Gonpa). By the year 1961 Bumtar Namdroling Gonpa (present Gonpa) was established at the present location. The original Gonpa was destroyed by the flood in the year 1968.

Ahaley Dichen Choling Gonpa is situated just above Namchi town in South Sikkim. In 1941, a Tamang lama called GESHELA SANGEY LAMA from Namchi went to Gyalmo in Nepal, thereafter to Tibet in pursuit of higher religious education and spent many years learning Buddhism under highly learned lamas and rinpoches. On his return to his native place, he begins to put his acquired knowledge into practice. He built a meditation hut (TSHAM KHANG) on the hillock near a cremation ground in 1952. It was gradually developed into a Gonpa.

A few kilometres from Namchi bazaar is situated a Gonpa called Sorok Tamang Gonpa. It was founded by a lama known as Sanman Lama in the year A.D. 1962. In 2005, a committee constructed new three-storeyed Gonpa near the old one. This institution is classified as Mani Lhakhang by the Ecclesiastical Department.

Pheri Namdrolling Tamang Gonpa is located near the highway of Maniram. The name Maniram, a reference to a hill standing at the back of this place. A stone at the top of the hill used to shine in the moonlight. It was believed that shining stone was the wish-fulfilling jewel or mani. It is believed that the name Maniram is derived from this jewel. This Gonpa was built by Lama Yongten Dorjee Tamang commonly known as Dong Mhe Mhe (grandfather in Tamang language) with the help of local villagers. The Gonpa is twenty years old and is allied to Alhalay Gonpa of Namchi. The main altar contains the statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Gurupadmashamva, and Avalokitesvara. This institution is classified as Mani Lhakhang by the Ecclesiastical Department.

Namthang Nyima Choling Tamang Gonpa is situated at Namthang Kolbung South Sikkim. The Lepcha word Kolbung means "walnut grove". The word refers to the large number of walnut trees that grew in this area. It is a new Gonpa built-in 1998 by the local people. The main altar contains a clay statue of Gurupadmashamva made by the head lama (Dorjee Loben) who was trained in statue making schools run by the Ecclesiastical Department at Gangtok. This institution is classified as Mani Lhakhang by the Ecclesiastical Department.

Dechen Samling Tamang Gonpa was established by Gomchen Pema Chewang Tamang (founding member of Tibetology) of Bumtar in 1955. In the year 1945, he went to Tibet and became a disciple of YongZin Rimpoche, where he met another disciple Kunzang Dichen (Queen of Sikkim). Both studied under the Rimpoche for some time. After spending eight years in Tibet, he returns back to Sikkim, learning about his return the Queen invited him to the palace and asked him to share his knowledge for public benefit. Chogyal Tashi Namgyal, then the king allotted ten acres of land at Tendong hill for a hermitage. the queen presented a statue of Guru Padmasambhava. the present structure was built in 1955 with the king donating GCI seats for the roof.

Samten Choling Gonpa was established in the year 2007 and was registered in the year 2010. Shri Amar Singh Tamang donated the land measuring 100x100 and Shri Indra Bahadur Tamang, measuring 29x100. the construction of Gonpa was done in an area measuring 22x22.

Pema Yeshar Gonpa was built in the year 1975. This Gonpa land was purchased from Jit Bahadur Tamang.

Mharpo Wangdi Gonpa started to build up in the year 2016. The Gonpa land measuring 130x70 square feet was donated by Lt. Tejman Tamang (Ex-panchayat of Passi south Sikkim). The Gonpa is still under construction.

Melli Tashi Chodarling Gonpa at Melli Dara is a Tamang Gonpa built-in 1906 by Lt. Kitab Singh Lama also known as Karma Rangdrol Lama. Later an earthquake damaged the Gonnpa and was renovated in 1959 but in due course, the structure became too dilapidated and was rebuilt in 1982 with Government aid, The Gonpa is still incomplete and need adequate fund to restore it. The Gonpa belongs to the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Dechen Chholing Gonpa was established in the year 1987 by Sikkim Tamang Buddhist Association in Sichey, East Sikkim. The land was donated by the president of the association late Satay Lamu. On completion of the Gonpa, Allay Mhomey of Namchi deputed one of his best disciples Gurmee Lama to look after it. His Holiness the Dalai Lama blessed this Gonpa in April 2005 and gifted a statue of Avalokitesvara. The altar at the upper floor contains a smaller statute of Guru Padmashamva, Buddha, and Avalokitesvara HH. The Dalai lama's gift statue is kept in this alter Kangur texts are also kept in one of the rooms. Over the year many high-ranking Tamang Lamas and Rinpoche have given sermons here. Every year Buddha Purnima is celebrated in a grand manner.

Rinchen Cholling Gonpa popularly known as Singtam Gonpa is situated, near Singtam Bazar East Sikkim. This Tamang Gonpa was founded by Tamang Welfare Association in 1992.t follows Nyingmapa schools The main Lhakhang contains statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, and all present there are twenty-three novice monks and 45 Nyamos (practicing Sadhana of Avalokitesvara)

Samsinglamzang Choling Gonpa situated by the roadside on the way to Pakyong Bazaar, East Sikkim. It was founded by learned Tamang lama known as Lama Lhakpa Bomzo in 2004 to cater to the religious needs of the devotees. It follows the Nyigamapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. This Gonpa is beautifully designed in a traditional manner the Gonpa is not fully functional.

SANGAG CHOLING GONPA was built in 1981 at Bhasmey Busty, under Pakyong sub-division. The land for this Gonpa was donated by Prem Bahadur Lama Tamang. The main altar has a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, and Avalokitesvara.

The Tamang community of the Makaibari area felt a need for a place of common worship, and handle and by raising contributions purchased a piece of land measuring 40x100 square feet from Mrs. Buddhi Maya Tamang w/o Kalu Tamang. This monastery is located near Rongli Bazaar and within Manay Sishey ward of Premlakha Subaneydara GPU of Rongli Sub-Division, East Sikkim. The construction of the Gonpa commenced in 2000 and was completed in 2004. The Govt. of Sikkim provided grant for repair and construction of the Gonpa.

Karma Choling Gonpa is situated at Chuchen, Takjuthang above Reshi-Mangalbarey Road, Buddhiman Tamang donated the land for the Gonpa 1983. The construction was commenced in 1999 and finished in 2008. The altar of the Gonpa has one Buddha statue. This Gonpa is affiliated to Allay Tamang Gorpa and belongs to the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. This institution is classified as Mani Lakhang by the ecclesiastical Department. The Gonpa is looked after by two monks. There are about 10 Nyomos attached to this Gonpa.

This Gonpa was built in 1967 on land donated by Kharka Bahadur Ghising and is situated in Lower Soreng. The Gonpa has 12 monks and belongs to the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The main altar contains a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, Guru Padmashamva, and Avalokitesvara (Tibetan Chenrezig). This institution is classified as Mani Lhakhang by the Ecclesiastical Department.

This Gonpa was established in the year 2008 and is under process for registration. This Gonpa is located at Takuthang Dara, Rinchenpong.
